Equmenopolis helps people to learn, work, and enjoy themselves in the digitized society with socially-intelligent conversational AI technology.
Founded in May 2022 as a spin-out from an academic research group in Tokyo, Equmenopolis creates a highly interactive multi-purpose conversational AI agent platform and corresponding applications to support any aspects of work and education. The first product is currently under development and is scheduled to launch in 2023.
Our team is built upon diverse backgrounds, including spoken dialogue systems, natural language processing, machine learning, VR/AR, applied linguistics, architecture, and media art. More than half of our team members are doctoral degree holders. Our backgrounds include Japan, the US, France, Poland, Colombia and more. We seek to continue recruiting world-class researchers and engineers.
User Experience Matters
To truly satisfy our users through conversational experiences, Research Scientists Specialized in Natural Language Processing for Dialogue Systems at Equmenopolis lead our efforts in developing any aspects of multi-purpose conversational AI agents that can communicate and engage with humans through complex and long-term socially-intelligent conversational strategies.
Drawing on expertise from a variety of disciplines including deep learning, natural language processing, and dialog management, our Research Scientists are at the forefront of groundbreaking conversational AI agent research.
Key Responsibilities
- Research: Design, implement and evaluate models, agents and software prototypes.
- Technical Communication and Publication: Report and present research findings and developments including status and results clearly and efficiently both internally and externally, verbally and in writing. We strongly encourage Research Scientists to publish the best of their work at top-tier conferences.
- Collaboration: Suggest and engage in team collaborations to meet ambitious research goals. Work with external collaborators and maintain relationships with relevant research labs and key individuals as appropriate.
Required Qualifications and Skills
In order to set you up for success as a Research Scientist at Equmenopolis, we look for the following skills and experience:
- PhD in a technical field or relevant practical experiences
And it is preferable if you have any relevant experiences and/or a proven track record of any publications of:
- Large language models (e.g. Transformers, BERT) for language understanding and generation, machine translation, grammar error detection and correction
- Reinforcement learning
- Dialogue management
- Neural-symbolic cognitive architectures for explainable AI
- Or any other topics of computational linguistics

Key Responsibilities
We are currently seeking out an in-house data rater to join our multidisciplinary R&D team (field of AI & linguistics), preferably on a full-time basis. As a data rater, you will be responsible for providing high quality training data by assessing and correctly labeling videos of English language students using our unique crowdsourcing platform. Your responsibilities will include:
- A reliable assessment of English language abilities of Japanese students using the CEFR (The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) scale
- Providing explainability for your assessment using knowledge from our training sessions and the CEFR manual
- Labeling large video data sets on a timely and efficient basis
- Interacting with our research development team to report and document issues
- Providing feedback for accurate and high quality rating practices and future improvement
- Involvement in the design process of speaking activities for our educational curriculum and training materials for junior raters
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably in an SLA-related (Second-Language Acquisition) field
- 3+ years of experience as an English language teacher in Japan
- Past experience with the CEFR scale is a plus but not needed
- Past experience with data rating is not required as we will provide you with in-house training
Employment Type

- 270,000 – 350,000 JPY (up to negotiation)
